Flex Lab, Purdue University | West Lafayette, IN

The design of this 103,000-square-foot, three-story-plus-basement, multidisciplinary research facility located in Discovery Park supports the College of Engineering and addresses the ever-evolving research needs of Purdue University. With a focus on flexibility and visibility throughout, the transformative and functionally efficient environment will encourage collaborative learning and discovery while addressing the changing nature of research. The project team evaluated structural systems based on the 2,000 micro-inches-per-second vibration criteria for the elevated floors, along with factors of cost and speed of construction. The building features 1,840 square feet of high-bay lab space, and a canopy with a 20’ cantilever and a structural steel vestibule mark the entry to the facility. Part of CE Solution’s scope also includes designing 142 linear feet of new utility tunnel to service the Flex Lab.
